Privacy, in plain words.
The short version: we count visits so we know what's useful, and where the law asks for consent first, only if you allow it. We don't run ads, we don't sell your information, and we never share it with HR-tech vendors. The newsletter signup is handled by Substack.
Who we are
The Signal HR (thesignalhr.com) is an independent publication run by Alex Rivera. Questions about this policy: alex@thesignalhr.com.
What we collect, and why
- Analytics. Google Analytics 4 tells us which pages and tools get used: pages viewed, approximate location (country or city), device and browser, how you arrived, and interactions such as filter choices on comparison pages. It sets cookies (named
_ga, kept for up to 13 months) to tell visits apart, only when your cookie choice allows it (see Cookies and your choice). Google signals and advertising features are off. We use it only to improve the site. - Newsletter. If you subscribe, Substack collects your email address and sends the newsletter, under Substack's privacy policy. The signup form on our pages is Substack's own embedded form.
- Email. If you write to us, we keep your message and address so we can reply.
- Settings in your browser. The site remembers your light or dark theme, your region filter and your cookie choice in your browser's local storage (
signal-theme,signal-region,signal-consent). They stay on your device, and clearing your browser data removes them. - Tools on comparison pages. Answers you give in the checks and finders run in your browser. We don't store them. Which options people pick may be counted in analytics, without identifying you.
- Site search. Search runs in your browser. The words you search for may be counted in analytics, without identifying you, so we can see what people look for and what's missing. Please don't type personal information into it.
Services that handle data for us
- Google Analytics (Google): visit statistics.
- Substack: newsletter signup and delivery.
- GitHub Pages (GitHub): hosting, which keeps standard server logs.
- Cloudflare: domain name services.
- Google Workspace (Google): email.
These providers may process data in the United States and other countries.
Cookies and your choice
The only cookies this site sets are Google Analytics cookies. Which default you get depends on where you are:
- Europe (including the EU, the UK and Switzerland), Brazil, and Canada's Eastern time zone, which includes Quebec: analytics stays off unless you choose "Allow analytics".
- Everywhere else: analytics is on, and a notice on your first visit lets you turn it off.
- Privacy signals: if your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, analytics stays off unless you turn it on.
To pick the default, the site reads your device's time-zone setting in your browser; it isn't sent to us or anyone else. If the time zone can't be read, analytics stays off until you choose. Google may also use the region of your IP address to keep analytics cookies off by default in the EU, the UK, Switzerland, Brazil and Quebec. Your choice is kept in your browser for up to 12 months (6 months if you say no). You can change it any time with Cookie settings at the bottom of every page, or here: .
The newsletter signup form is Substack's own embedded form, covered by Substack's privacy policy. The site's fonts are served from this site, not from Google.
What we don't do
- No advertising, and no selling of personal information.
- No sharing with HR-tech vendors, and no paid placements of any kind.
- No tracking you across other websites for advertising.
How long we keep it
Analytics data is kept for the retention period set in Google Analytics, no longer than 14 months. Emails are kept as long as needed to handle the conversation. Substack keeps your subscription until you unsubscribe.
Your choices and rights
- Change your analytics choice any time with Cookie settings at the bottom of every page.
- Block or delete cookies in your browser, or use Google's opt-out add-on for Google Analytics.
- Unsubscribe from the newsletter with the link in any issue.
- Ask us what personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing alex@thesignalhr.com.
Depending on where you live, for example in the EU, the UK or California, you may have further rights, including the right to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
The site is written for working professionals. It isn't directed to children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and its effective date.
